The New Weight Loss Pill on the Market, Is Contrave Any Good?

The appeal of the diet pill doesn’t seem to have waned at all. A new compound, which goes by the name Contrave, has join dozens of other brands and compounds already on the shelves and has just been approve by the FDA. It was formulated with two different drugs at the same time. So here we are again – is it safe and does it really do what it should?

It really is an interesting combination for a diet pill. Contrave contains two well-known drugs, reused for a new purpose. It contains bupropion, the familiar antidepressant, and naltrexone, a drug that people who have been through alcohol rehab are familiar with. So why would anyone want to treat weight loss with antidepressants and rehab drugs?

The antidepressant is to help increase the levels of dopamine that you have in your brain. What happens is it suppresses your appetite and makes you feel much more energetic. And the alcohol detox, on the other hand, just makes food less tasty. Even if the antidepressant allows you to eat a little bit, you won’t really like what you’re eating and you won’t want to eat as much. Now, that sounds like some kind of special hell.

So does it really work? They did several one-year studies with thousands of obese people. They found that people who took Contrave lost maybe 4% more weight than people who took the placebo. As for the FDA, if a new drug doesn’t make you lose weight at least 5% better than someone taking a sugar pill, it’s not a good enough drug. However, in some of their trials, they found that their participants lost 5% more. And the drug is approve by the FDA.

So this is not a weight loss pill that promises sensational results. But is it at least safe? In tests, some people found they had a slight increase in blood pressure when they took Contrave, at least for the first two months. People who take the drug often also complain of nausea, difficulty with constipation and constant headaches. The problem with Contrave is that it does not lead to heart disease like Fen-Phen or Meridia.

Is it a safe drug or not? No one really knows what it does in the long term; In the short term, however, its effects on weight loss are quite encouraging. You will probably want to discuss this with your doctor.

A New Prescription Diet Pill

There is a new drug that is one step away from being approved for the treatment of obesity. The name of this drug is Contrave ™. It is a formulation of other drugs, part bupropion and part naltrexone. When taken together in specific amounts and in a sustaine-release formulation, so to significantly reduce weight in obese patients. The manufacturer of Contrave is Orexigen Therapeutics, which has already invested years of research and a lot of money and time developing and testing almost everything that can be tested with this combination. Thousands of patients have taken part in these studies, some lasting as long as a year to ensure that the drug itself is effective compare to a placebo, as well as safe enough for the public. Bupropion-naltrexone (Contrave)

As a result, it was recently submitted to the FDA for approval and in December 2010, the FDA committee panel reviewe the positives and negatives of this drug and then voted on its recommendation. The vote was 13-7 in favour of its approval. January 31, 2011 is the date the FDA has set to evaluate Contrave and decide whether to approve it or not. In most cases, the FDA will listen to what its panel has said about a new drug and follow its advice. However, it should be noted that you are not require to do so and, in theory, you still cannot approve Contrave. Bupropion-naltrexone (Contrave)

The combination of bupropion and naltrexone is interesting. Bupropion is an antidepressant that works differently to many of the usual SSRI antidepressants, but has shown the side effect of many of the weight loss medications. It has been prescribe by some doctors as a weight loss drug, but it has been done “off-label”, meaning that a regulatory body has never approve the use of bupropion for this use. Bupropion has also been use to help people stop smoking / nicotine addiction. Naltrexone is a drug more often prescribe to help patients overcome drug and alcohol related addictions. When these two are combine, researchers have found that naltrexone helps maintain weight loss where bupropion often begins to slow. The idea of a combination of weight loss drugs is not new, there are a few others being tested to treat obesity, including Qnexa and Empatic.
